In the heart of Attica, Michigan, a remarkable family thrives—a family bound by love, perseverance, and a zest for life. The Vadens, consisting of Angela Vaden-Cruice (43), her husband Jonathan Vaden (44), and their five children—Lily (19), Cassius (14), Hendrix (10), Ziggy (7), and and bonus child Alicia (20)—have a story that’s both inspiring and full of heart. Through life’s ups and downs, they’ve come out stronger, creating a home and a legacy that radiates compassion, community involvement, and a spirit of adventure.
Angela and Jonathan’s love story began 20 years ago in Mount Clemens, Michigan. The two met in a nightclub, and their connection was instantaneous. Angela, who lived in Warren at the time, welcomed Jonathan into her life soon after they met, and the pair became inseparable. That same year, their first daughter, Lily, was born, sealing their bond as a family.
After five years of love and partnership, the couple tied the knot in Las Vegas on March 7, 2009, surrounded by 40 friends and family members—including Lily, who was there to witness this joyful moment. The story doesn’t end there, though. In 2022, following Angela’s victorious battle with breast cancer, the couple returned to Las Vegas to renew their vows, this time in a ceremony officiated by none other than Elvis Presley. It was a full-circle moment, symbolizing not only their love for each other but their resilience as a couple.
Angela’s career is as inspiring as her personal story. Raised in Troy, she graduated from Avondale High School in 1999 with top honors before attending Wayne State University to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She later transitioned into nursing, studying at Baker College and becoming a labor and delivery nurse—a career she dedicated 15 years of her life to.
Her passion for helping women and families didn’t stop there. Angela became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and worked at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. In April 2024, she opened her own private practice, The Nesting Spot LLC, where she continues to support new mothers with breastfeeding and postnatal care. This new venture is the culmination of Angela’s years of experience and her deep desire to empower women, not just medically but emotionally and mentally.
Jonathan Vaden is an Automation Technician who brings a hands-on, problem-solving approach to both his work and hobbies. In his spare time, he enjoys cheering for the Lions, crafting with his 3D printer, and spending time hunting or fixing things—what Angela fondly refers to as "tinkering." His musical talent is remarkable, as he can play just about any instrument, a gift his kids have clearly inherited. Weekends in the Vaden household are special, with Saturday and Sunday mornings often filled with acoustic family sing-alongs after breakfast, creating lasting memories through music.
The Vadens are a close-knit family, each member contributing something special to the household. Lily, their oldest, is a talented artist and musician. She plays the piano and ukulele, often filling the house with her songs. Her creativity extends beyond music—Lily has a passion for early childhood education and is preparing to begin her studies in that field.
Cassius, their 14-year-old young man, plays tennis at Imlay City High School and enjoys video games and playing the bass guitar in his free time. Like many teenagers, he loves hanging out with friends and making the most of his high school years.
Hendrix, 10, is a budding athlete, with a particular love for soccer. His passion for the game is infectious, and he’s always eager to practice or ride his dirt bike when he’s not on the field. Meanwhile, Ziggy, the youngest Vaden at 7 years old, is an energetic little boy with a love for water and soccer. He also enjoys breakdancing and spending time with his friends.
Alicia, the family’s “bonus kid,” is currently serving in the U.S. Navy and is stationed in Virginia. Though physically distant, she remains close to the family’s heart, and they’re incredibly proud of her accomplishments.
Angela and her family are deeply involved in their community, particularly in helping young homeless girls find jobs, housing, and resources. Angela has made it her mission to support young mothers, helping them navigate the challenges of parenthood. As a participant of the Lapeer Social Club and several other community groups, Angela continually looks for ways to make a difference in people’s lives and build relationships. Angela says, “I have some community projects I’m working on for the next year that I’m so excited about too! I also am an advocate for mental health, suicide prevention, women’s rights, substance abuse disorders and ending the stigma around women’s health and mental health in general! Women should not feel ashamed to reach out for help!”
Her boys have also been involved in the local community through sports, particularly soccer, where Hendrix and Ziggy both play for the Lapeer Nationals Soccer League. In the past, all three of her sons were part of the competition dance team at Michigan Dance Company, adding another dimension of community and teamwork to their lives.
In April 2021, Angela received life-altering news: she had been diagnosed with Stage 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) breast cancer. But as with every challenge the family has faced, they came together and supported each other through the difficult times. Angela underwent chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, followed by DIEP Flap reconstruction in December 2021. Her strength and resilience during this time were remarkable, and it’s no surprise that she’s come out stronger, ready to take on new challenges with her family by her side.
If the Vadens had to sum up their philosophy of life in one word, it would be "YOLO"—you only live once. They do the best they can with any situation thrown their way; like homeschooling 10 kids in the Vaden household during Covid. Can you imagine? Their approach to life is filled with adventure, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the power of love and community. From traveling to destinations like New Orleans, Myrtle Beach, and Cape Cod to simply enjoying downtime together on the front porch, the Vadens truly live life to the fullest.
Through the highs and lows, the Vadens have become a family that embodies love, perseverance, and a deep connection to both each other and their community. Their story is a testament to the strength of family and the power of living life with joy and purpose. Angela would like to say, “For all the (young) females reading this...I want you to feel empowered to make educated decisions when it comes to yourself, your health, your family and your kids. There is support and resources available!!
