1881: The Fire That Touched Every Township – Part 3: Goodland’s Hotel and Harvest Lost
In September 1881, Goodland Township was deep into harvest. The fields were stacked with grain, barns were full, and the village hotel bustled with travelers and townsfolk. But on the afternoon of September 5, the fire that had already chewed through parts of Lapeer County reached Goodland, and within hours, the community’s centerpieces were reduced to ashes.
A Village Engulfed
The fire’s arrival was swift and merciless. Hot winds carried embers into the heart of the township, igniting the hotel — a key gathering place for residents and visitors alike. Flames quickly spread to nearby barns, stacks of freshly harvested grain, and timber piles from local sawmills. Residents tried to save what they could, but the heat was so intense that people were forced to retreat as entire buildings collapsed in fire.
The Loss Beyond Buildings
While the destruction of homes and businesses was devastating, the loss of stored grain and hay was a blow that would be felt for months. Farmers faced a winter without feed for livestock, and families worried about food stores for themselves. The loss of the hotel also meant the loss of a social and economic hub — a place where travelers rested, meetings were held, and news was shared.
